Christmas Lights 2015

For many years Witney's Christmas Lights switch-on has been organised and run by Witney Town Council. In 2013 the council had to make budget savings and were unable to continue organising this annual event.

Witney Lions Club decided to hold a Christmas Fayre in 2013, so that Witney residents would have a Christmas event to look forward to. The event was a success, but the short duration of this type of event prevented the club fully covering it's costs. Lions clubs, under their constitution, are not permitted to use  charity donations made to the club to fund this type of event.

In 2014 Witney Round Table Club organised a similar event, but again, whilst the event was a success, they were unable to fully cover their costs.

Witney Carnival is organised by the three Witney Service Clubs, Lions, Rotary and Round Table. A meeting was held in March this year where the three clubs discussed the possibility of, in addition to the Carnival, also taking on the organisation and running of a Christmas Lights event. A letter was sent to Witney Town Council indicating that the three service clubs would now like to work together, on a more formal basis, to arrange a switch-on event for 2015.

A letter has now been received from the council accepting the clubs offer, and indicating that grant-aid would be made available to cover the clubs costs, so that their charity funds were not at risk.

Detailed planning for the event commenced in August, the date for event has already been set for FRIDAY 27th NOVEMBER, 5.30 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. in Witney Market Place. Father Christmas and the Mayor will switch on the lights at 6.30 p.m.

Provisional outlines for the event are Entertainment on a stage, Father Christmas sleigh, Fun Fair, Charity & Commercial food stalls, and possibly a Lantern Procession and Tree of Light. But all events are subject to further discussion and agreement with the council at this stage.

Further updates will be posted on the clubs websites and in the local media.
